I may not be entirely accurate but I believe that when it comes to monks and ascetics, their philosophy and striving for peace is not the striving to eliminate suffering, but instead to contend with suffering, to contend with the tension. Suffering cannot be eliminated because our world will always be filled with it.

As for the portion on the struggling and striving for a worthwhile goal, it seems like the aim of Buddhism and other teachings are worth pursuing and hence also fit the description, although slightly deviating from the norm.
